Sztojka Brothers
I have started my series in 2019 about a roma family living in deep poverty in a small town in Hungary near Budapest , in Ullo. They live in a ruins of a little house, there is no electricity , water supply is only in the garden and there is no central heating, the family has a woodburner so they use wood to heat the house. I wanted to demonstrate by using my camera ,that despite all the stereotypical ideas about how roma families live, there is a life we don't know much about. The life they lead is full of challenges of everyday life, financial worries and worries about how they will feed their children. However, at the same time, their life is full of love, happyness , they are selfless and they show respect towards each other , maybe even more so than non roma families. This little roma family doesn't have a smart phone or a TV , the boys play outside in the garden and they help their parents to chop the wood for the winter. The communication between the parents and the children is transparent, they discuss everything and the children take part in big decisions in every aspect of their family life. The subjects of my series are the two boys of this family. Arpika , who is 13 years old and Janika, who is 15 years old. Their life is changing so much at the moment over a year, they are teenagers and they are exploring the world around them. My goal is to document their journey of becoming a young adult and how they deal with their difficulties that face them in life.
